'The Lodger' - Live Score with the Great Necks Guitar Trio and cellist Michael Shein
The Lodger — celebrating its 100th anniversary — is Alfred Hitchcock’s first great film, a Jack the Ripper–esque mystery/comedy featuring a handsome stranger, a beautiful blonde, and a string of murders that occur every Tuesday night.
Experience this iconic silent film in a completely new way: with an original score by composer Joe Williams, performed live by virtuoso cellist Michal Shein and The Great Necks Guitar Trio. St. Louis Classical Guitar is excited to collaborate with Cinema STL and the Hi-Pointe once again for two live score performances of ‘The Lodger,’ on Saturday, May 15 at 3pm and 7:30pm.
This production blends the thrill of classic cinema with the intimacy and immediacy of chamber music — creating an unforgettable night at the movies.
This 1927 classic is Hitchcock's third film and first masterpiece. With a lusciously restored film, the Master of Suspense showcases his brilliant cinematography, storytelling and devilish humor in this Jack the Ripper-esque romp.
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) has had many different scores over the years in many different musical styles. The score by Dr. Joe Williams II was commissioned by Austin Classical Guitar and originally presented 2015 in collaboration with the Alamo Drafthouse. Originally written for Grammy Nominated artists Bion Tsang and the Texas Guitar Quartet, Williams creates a rich and detailed sound world with just 5 performers. Since then, it has been championed by Adam Levin (The Great Necks) and had its first international premiere in Norway with Randall Avers in 2019.
